4th - 5th Grade
Channing House
Fireplace Room

Older elementary children are learning about our Unitarian Universalist traditions and values in more depth, in a lively atmosphere. Children get to connect with our UU heritage in new and fun ways, while exploring their own unique spirituality. A strong social justice theme is woven throughout the year, and children are encouraged to take more roles of leadership.

Pillar I: Jewish and Christian Heritage. September 16 - December 16

Bibleodeon is a curriculum introduced through the Shelter Rock Unitarian Universalist Congregation in New York. Bibleodeon tells stories for children - like the Nickelodeon television channel that helped suggest its name. Bibleodeon presents the greatest Hebrew and Christian stories in a Unitarian Universalist setting. Participants explore connections between biblical events and UU principals and values, between biblical ideas and their own lives. They experience the Bible as one of many wonderful and important UU sources. Just as important to fourth and fifth graders, Bibleodeon is fun. Participants listen to some stories, and act some out. They investigate others, the way television reporters would. They immerse themselves in music and art and creative activity, achieving in the process new understanding of and appreciation for some of civilization's most important books.

Pillar II: Exploring the Seven UU Principles . January 6 - March 16

The curriculuum, We Believe, is based on the praxis model of education. Each week the children and leaders gather, then share, what they already know about the week's theme, reflecting on how they came tothat knowledge. A story and activity follows - art, drama, games, discussion and songs are shared. Finally, the ideas explored are put to work in an active and intentional way - to live our principles.

Leaders of our Green Team include Cathy Wigand, Christine Bandoni and Carmen Smith.
